Chanel in Review; the Beginning

Gabrielle Chanel left a legacy unlike any other. Merely saying the name conjures up images of the epitome of class, elegance and beauty. Although Chanel left an incredible house when she passed, her life was not on an easy one. Born to a father who traveled often and a mother who had no choice but to go alone with him, the early years of Chanel's childhood were spent like a gypsy with her four siblings. Chanel's mother died after she had her third boy, Gabrielle's fifth sibling, when Gabrielle was 11. Her father dropped them off at an orphanage, never to return.

                    Some interesting things

• Chanel's parents didn't marry until she was two. Gabrielle was incredibly ashamed of this, of everything about her rough childhood, and she is incredibly infamous for lying about her past.
• Gabrielle's father was not present at the time of her birth so her birth certificate reads "Gabrielle Chasnel". She never legally changed it to Chanel because she was ashamed of the circumstances of her birth and upbringing.
• Gabrielle was raised with her three sisters in an orphanage named Aubazine. It was run by the sisters in the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Mary. Chanel, however, never truly admitted to living in an orphanage. To Gabrielle, she was raised by aunts who she later admitted she owed everything ot. Gabrielle said she got her drive, her strength and determination by being such a defiant child while living in Auzbine.
• Gabrielle spent the first 17 years of her life at Auzbine.

 

 

 

 

More scandals are coming up. This was just a teaser it its own little way. Chanel's life was incredible and I recommend the book Chanel; A Woman of Her Own by Axel Madsen to anyone who wants to read up on this legendary fashion icon. I will be posting more about her life and legacy on here, so keep checking back!

Just Cavalli Resort 2013 Collection Review

An undeniable nod to hip hop culture, this collection is both young and over the top without being...well, too young and over the top. Prints on prints on more prints, are typical Just Cavalli. Roberto, however, managed to make this collection fresh by keeping the silhouettes rather simple and letting the prints make the statement. From high waisted floral shorts that could pass as hot pants to a straight cut cheetah print dress with "Just Beautiful" clad on the front, this collection takes quite a few directions. Roberto, however, manages to seamlessly incorporate each distinct look into one cohesive collection, while still retaining what Just Cavalli is. The thick strapped sandals manage to add a lady like touch to a somewhat androgynous collection, a simple way to show just how sexy the Cavalli girl truly is.

 

 

 

 

 

The Little Things

It's the little things that seem to inspire me. It hits all at once, a profound feeling really, leaving me senseless and scared to follow through with all the passion that has seemed to flood my veins. I never know how to channel my inspiration, BUT, if you're smart and realize that this is indeed a fashion blog, you probably figured out I channel my inspiration through my clothing. Just a disclaimer, however, that this is NOT an outfit post. That will come, my dear readers, that will come. This post is simply to explain what is inspiring me at this moment.

 

Ancient Egypt

 

The clothing, the beautiful jewelry, the culture and religion. I want to learn so much more about this inc4edible culture. From their beliefs of the afterlife and the Pharaoh to how kohl eye linear helped keep bugs and dirt out of their eyes.

And let's not forget the pyramids. Probably the most incredible thing man has ever created.

 

 

 

Edgar Allan Poe

After reading some stories recently and seeing The Raven (which you should all see), Poe has been an influencing factor on my wardrobe…well somewhat. I tend to wear a lot of black and darker color anyways, but now I just feel like Poe is one of the reasons. Poe is known for his lingering words that are so haunting and dark. I grew up with my dad reading me The Raven, and I have always loved Poe and his tragic life.

The wardrobe in The Raven is visually stunning.

 

Dark Shadows

Obviously, I went and saw this movie. I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. Based on the soap opera, this movie is about a vampire that comes back to his family after being buried in a coffin or 200 years. I personally love Burton and I think he did an awesome job in this movie. Just like The Raven, the wardrobe in this movie caught my attention. Set in the 70's, there was definitely a lot of beautiful pieces.

Chanel; A Book to be Reviewed

One of my wonderful friends, Miranda (of High Voltage Blog), got me this wonderful book as a graduation present. I've only read about 100 pages so far, but I have decided I will be putting tidbits from this book on here. Obviously, paraphrasing the book is super boring, so I'll be putting quotes and my reaction and what not.

Stefano Pilati of YSL

I was flipping through Vogue Paris Collections (Spring/Summer 2012) and came across the picture of Stefano Pilati. There is one fascinating fact about this man that I failed to realize; he has tattoos. Stefano himself sports a sleeve and a few other stray tattoos if I'm not mistaken. It's interesting and refreshing to see designers for some of the most influential fashion houses with ink on them. Although there is still a slight stigma with tattoos in the fashion industry, I am ecstatic to see that is slowly going away. Honestly though, if it were to go away, it would make sense to so in fashion (or music, of course). Well done tattoos are art that is worn on the skin, a story for one to tell without having to utter a single word. Fashion is all about expressing oneself through the clothes on their back, so it makes sense that the industry is accepting of those that lay out their story on their skin. Marc Jacobs is covered in tattoos and is one of the most influential designers of the industry, along with Pilati, and if these two men can rock the industry with tattoos, who's to say everyone else can't?

 

 

Sorry I haven't been posting lately, dear readers. The last few weeks of school have been wrapping up and I've been stuck in their every fiery grip. Once graduation hits and my summer adventures commence, however, I will have many, many posts. Also, a lot more outfit posts will be happening. Crazy outfits are going to be an everyday occurrence once graduation hits and I have no more dress code.

Ann Demeulemeester Spring 2012 RTW Collection Review

Power. Pure, utter, raw power. Each piece manages to enthrall the wearer; each piece manages to enthrall any onlooker. Ann Demeulemeester creates art for women who are strong; women who are intriguing, interesting, even dark. Layers of the sheerest fabric layered upon slips that keep just enough to the imagination weave together the look of a woman who likes to keep her class and sense of mystery. Even in white, there is still a shadow of something dark in each piece; an edge as sharp as a knife but subtle enough that you have to dig just a little bit under the surface to find it. The juxtaposition of the long layers in the summer work wonders with the sheer fabric, just thin enough that it's still wearable. Ann Demeulemeester manages to cultivate a gothic love story, a garden that blooms with the promise of intrigue. All in all, this collection is nearly flawless, and proves one of my favorite points; black is NOT seasonal.

 

 

 

 

Red Top Mountain

As I was trying to figure out what to post tonight, I remembered that about two weeks ago my best friend and I took a mini road trip to a local state park in Georgia called Red Top Mountain. It was the most beautiful kind of day, and we got some great (hipstamatic) pictures. This is kind of a different post for this blog, but different is good, right?
